The voluntary sector is working to develop income generating activities in India in various ways. These include:
- Lobbying and advocacy work to increase the government’s commitment to ensuring that credit policy and the regulatory environment supports access to finance by the poor.
- Encouraging the development of the Self Help Groups which bring microfinance to the poorest and most marginalized groups of society.
- Supporting participatory approaches to income generation, such as watershed management, innovative methods of sustainable agriculture and waste management.
- Providing poor people with better access to the assets that form the basis of their incomes.
